We Laughed Out Loud!

October 24 - 26, 2008  Smile

YACT Fall Conference

We did Table Topics and Humorous Speaking contests this fall, in order to synch up with Toastmasters International's calendar.

The 2008 YACT Fall Conference Committee arranged for a Criminal Attorney to be our Keynote Speaker.

Surprised What??!!

Ed Hearn, Toastmasters’ 2006 WORLD CHAMPION OF  PUBLIC SPEAKING also has a Master’s Degree in Urban Ministry.

His studies in theology as well as his license to practice law have combined to give him a VERY unique and insightful view of life!

Ed Hearn came in first among 26,000 Contestants from 30 countries. His story was motivational, inspirational, and humorous, all at the same time!

Keynote: Developing Your Amazing Potential as a Speaker!

RECAP

The Courage to Try – A sensational Educational Workshop presented by Ed, Hearn, the 2006 World Champion of Public Speaking, motivated me to write an article for the YACT Newsletter.  I’ve attended several YACT Conferences before and was reminded why I attend.
- yummy food
- a dazzling display of  entertainment
- lots of laughter
- Hugs from old friends and opportunities to meet new members.
- Thought-provoking workshops

THANK YOU to the TM members who volunteer to organize YACT conferences, and who present the workshops.   If you missed this conference, there is always another – every fall and spring.   If you have never attended, take Ed Hearn’s challenge and “have the courage to try.”  Plan to attend the next YACT Conference.  Better Yet, volunteer to organize the Spring Conference in Whitehorse and develop your communication and leadership skills!

Rx from "Dr. Proctor"

The talented Suezy Proctor, former International Director from Region 1 and DTM3 has ancestral links to Alaska and was delighted to speak at the YACT Fall conference.  Suezy claimed she wasn't funny, but the belly laughter in the audience would lead you to believe otherwise. Suezy showed us how to weave vocal variety, acting and singing into speeches during her educational workshop.  Additionally, she shared tips to help toastmasters excel as speakers. When you are the speaker, ask for feedback beyond your manual evaluation. Ask club additional members to evaluate your skills on a specific personal goal such as eye contact or meaningful gestures, or your vocal variety.

Another tip from Suezy: step outside of your comfort level - sing in a choir or a karaoke bar to develop your breath for speaking. Develop your speaking skills both inside and outside of the club. Finally, pick the advanced manual you want to AVOID and begin to practice those speeches.

Suezy gave the word 'practice' new meaning. Feel the power of space and air around your words while practicing in a whisper, enunciating every word and consonant ending.  Then, shout your speech, one syllable, one word at a time moving your face and expanding your gestures. Next, speak slowly and deliberately over-exaggerating every word.  Finally practice speaking as rapidly as you can without stopping. These techniques will help you find the rhythm and timing for your speech and help you to excel as a speaker.
