Is It The End or Beginning?

Three... Two… One… Happy New Year!  As I write this we are three days away from the final days from being members of our Territorial Council to being members of a district and the start of the new Toastmaster Year.  We are also three days away from joining our new Toastmasters district families.  Members of the State of Alaska clubs will join the Western Washington family of District 32.  Members of Yukon Territory clubs will join the Canadian province of British Columbia to become a combined District 96 family.

In some ways the final days of YACT may seem like the ending.  It is the ending of our existence as a Territorial Council.  It is also been the last year one of our conference would be held in the Yukon Territory.  It may seem like the last time many of us will spend with members in different countries.

In fact it is just the beginning for us.  These last days as a Territorial Council leading up to our joining district families reminds me of the opening of the original Star Trek series: “Space, the final frontier. These are the voyages of the Starship Enterprise.  Its five-year mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before.”

Instead of us exploring space, we are exploring opportunities, increasing our extending Toastmasters family, and embarking on new journeys which have only been available to members of Alaska and the Yukon Territory if they moved to a geography within a Toastmasters district.  Members who have desired to compete on the world stage can progress up the competition levels to ultimately compete in person at the World Champion of Public Speaking.  Members whom wish to serve in a leadership role beyond the Council can ultimately be appointed as Region Advisor or run for International Director and an International Officer position.

It has been my honor and privilege to serve you as Council Governor this past year.  For those in the Yukon, stay in touch.  I am sure your District 96 family is anxious to give you a warm welcome and embrace you into their family.  You are always welcome to join us Alaska for the District 32 conference October 9-11.  For those in Alaska, you will begin receiving the District 32 newsletter titled the View from 32 in July.  In addition, I am looking forward to serving you in the upcoming year as the District 32 District Director.

Warmest regards,

Angela Ritchey, DTM
